Hello! We frequently get asked about turning computers off or leaving them on. Talk to different companies, and you may get differing opinions.
The G First Opinion is this:
Leave them on, but give them a break. Everyone needs a little break every now and then – even your computer!
The details… You don’t have to go weeks without turning off your computer. The key is balance. It’s certainly okay to let your computer run for a few days or a week without shutting it down. As a rule of thumb, once a week, give your computer a break and shut it down. This will give it an opportunity to update programs and “reboot.” We suggest finding a day of the week where you might be slower than other days, or an evening or an early morning and Start – Shut Down your computer completely to power off state. Leave it for an hour or so and maybe even overnight. Then, power it up fully, login, and give it 15 minutes to load up everything. Then reboot using the “Restart” option.
The technical side… Frequent heating and cooling cycles can shorten the life of your computer. Startups and shutdowns are harder on a computer than letting it hum along.
